Summary

This hands-on editorial leader manages day-to-day news workflow, edits and shapes coverage, and leads a team of staff reporters and regular freelancers.  This role helps shape the strategic direction, creation, and distribution of news and information programming across multiple media platforms. This editor will prioritize a digital newsroom approach, help lead newsletter production, and drive cross-platform visual storytelling initiatives that serve and reflect our community. Our ideal team player brings extensive newsroom leadership experience, a sharp editorial vision, and deep knowledge of the Sacramento region and Northern California.

Essential Functions

  • Leads daily editorial operations: assign, edit, and publish high-quality local news stories for the website and newsletter.
  • Oversees and mentors a mix of full-time journalists and regular freelance contributors; manage schedules, deadlines, budgets, and editorial standards.
  • Helps produce and edit multiple newsletters, coordinate story selection, headlines, teasers, and layout for maximum reader engagement and clarity.
  • Maintains a digital workflow — optimize stories for web, mobile, email, and social platforms; ensure SEO and analytics best practices are applied.
  • Collaborates with visual/content teams to plan and execute cross-platform multimedia and visual storytelling (photos, graphics, short video, data visuals).
  • Identifies coverage opportunities and local reporting priorities tied to audience needs and community impact.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with community sources and partners; represent Abridged in community forums and events as needed.
  • Ensures accuracy, fairness, and adherence to PBS/KVIE editorial standards and ethics.
  • Tracks performance metrics, use audience data to refine coverage strategy, and contribute to planning and editorial meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be mission-driven and passionate about the role of public media.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficiency in technology and software to enhance efficiency in editing, newsroom management, database organization, and analytics.
  • Clear, open, and proactive communication skills.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Collaborative and works effectively with diverse stakeholders as a team.
  • Positively and professionally represents PBS KVIE throughout the community, and in forums and events related to news and information.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and employee development.
  • Proven experience editing reporters’ work for clarity, accuracy, tone, and audience appropriateness.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor both staff reporters and freelance contributors.
  • Experience producing and editing newsletters and familiarity with newsletter tools/workflows.
  • Strong editorial judgment in investigative journalism, breaking news, and documentary-style reporting with a commitment to journalistic integrity.
  • Familiarity with Abridged, PBS KVIE, the greater Sacramento region, and the audiences we serve (or demonstrated ability to learn and engage with those audiences quickly).
  • Solid digital skills: CMS proficiency, basic SEO, analytics interpretation, and familiarity with multimedia/visual storytelling tools and best practices.
  • Experience with data-driven or visual journalism preferred (data visualization, interactive features, short-form video).
  • Prior experience leading cross-platform editorial projects or coordinating with design/visual teams preferred.

Education / Experience

  • BA/BS degree in Journalism or equivalent experience.
  • 3 – 5 years of news editing experience (digital newsroom experience strongly preferred).

Special Conditions

  • Must have a valid California driver’s license and meet insurance standards.
  • Available to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Light local travel required.
