Schedule: A flexible schedule may be available based on role and department's needs after 90 days of training.

Independently develops and produces original, creative sports journalism with a primary focus on high school athletics throughout the greater Sacramento region. Essential Functions
- Independently conceives, develops, and writes original sports journalism, including a weekly high school sports newsletter featuring enterprise reporting, analysis, profiles, rankings, trends, standout performances, and other regional sports coverage.
- Covers high school games, tournaments, championships, and other significant sporting events, developing coverage that provides context and insight beyond game results.
- Exercises independent editorial judgment in identifying stories and determining angles, sources, reporting approaches, and presentation, consistent with PBS KVIE/Abridged editorial standards and journalistic ethics.
- Builds and maintains relationships with coaches, athletic directors, athletes, school representatives, and other sports contacts throughout the greater Sacramento region.
- Monitors the regional sports landscape to identify emerging athletes, teams, trends, issues, and other opportunities for compelling coverage.
- Contributes college, professional, and other regional sports reporting and multimedia content as needed.
- Collaborates with the editorial team on coverage priorities, planning, deadlines, and storytelling opportunities.
- May edit and assign freelancer writers and photographers as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must be mission-driven and passionate about the role of public media.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other technology tools relevant to the position.
- Demonstrates clear, effective, and proactive communication.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities, and manage time effectively.
- Provides professional and responsive service and support to internal and external stakeholders.
- Positively and professionally represents PBS KVIE throughout the community.
- Leverages AI and technology tools to enhance efficiency and effectiveness while maintaining independent judgment and responsibility for the accuracy, originality, integrity, confidentiality, and quality of all work product, in compliance with organizational policies, journalistic ethics, and professional standards.
- Extensive knowledge of high school athletics in the Sacramento region and familiarity with the regional sports media landscape and audience.
- Established relationships within the Sacramento region's high school sports community with demonstrated ability to develop and maintain sources.
Education / Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Broadcast, English, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of six years of professional journalism experience, with significant experience covering prep and/or college sports.
- Demonstrated experience covering sports in the Sacramento region strongly preferred.
Special Conditions
- Must have a valid California driver’s license and meet insurance standards.
- Available to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Local travel required.
