The Sacramento LGBT Community Center, Sacramento Rainbow Chamber of Commerce and other organizations are partnering with the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare Foundation (NCF)’s Know Your Rights Initiative to host a Town Hall discussion about Social Security benefits newly available to same-sex married couples.
When the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act in June 2013, seismic changes occurred. For LGBT Californians, it unequivocally opened up hundreds of earned federal benefits to legally married same-sex couples--none more important than Social Security benefits. With over 200,000 same-sex couples in the U.S., many raising children, the need to better understand these benefits and how to access them has increased exponentially. A considerable amount of money is now available to those who meet basic eligibility requirements. These informative and insightful Town Halls are intended to provide clarity as to how to access these rights.
